Der Autor Timothy Brennan (* 1953) ist Kulturwissenschaftler an der University of Minnesota (Hauptcampus in der Zwilllingsstadt Minneapolis/St. Paul). Brennan studierte und promovierte bei Edward Said und war bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 2003 mit ihm befreundet. Dadurch hatte Brennan beispiellosen Zugang zu den Ideen und dem Vermächtnissen seines Doktorvaters.
